Well, um, it just isn't. I believe you are taking the word "add" too literally. In ALTER TABLE, "add" can mean "add a new
column", but if the column-name already exists, "add" will be interpreted as "alter". This is needlessly confusing, in my opinion, but
there it is. Computers do not speak English, so there is no requirement that English-like words in a computer language have any relation to
their ordinary English meanings. :-(
