Oh- i am sorry to have led to the confusion - when i said THERE IS NO ERROR FLASHED what i meant was the "ALTER TABLE " statement went through without giving an error.

This is what i get :

 BTEQ -- Enter your DBC/SQL request or BTEQ command:
alter table t1 add a int;

alter table t1 add a int;

 *** Table has been modified.
 *** Total elapsed time was 1 second.

 BTEQ -- Enter your DBC/SQL request or BTEQ command:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

So why didn't it say the column already exists i.e WHY DID IT PASS.
