NOTE: ******** RANT MODE ON ************
This is a continuing rant of mine against Teradata. I have made the following recommendation on several occasions to a number of
different senior Teradata people.
When the query does not require any sorting, grouping, or other special work, why does the whole answer set have to be materialized in
spool? I and my users want answers back. A large percentage of queries run only want to get a representative look at a few rows and the
user cancels the request. With all of the talk about active data warehousing, the time to first row returned gets increasingly important.
Complete materialization of the answer in spool is significantly detrimental to this. I consider DB2's implementation of this strategy to
be a real plus in their bag of tricks. Anybody else agreeing that materializing the entire answer set in spool prior to returning the first
row is a negative, please let your feeling be known to NCR..
