  Ouch! This expression assumes too much about the internal representation of dates. Don't make any assumptions about internal representations!! (What if, in the next release, dates were stored as the number of days since 1/1/1?)  



I agree with Geoffrey: don't treat the date as an integer with div and mod. Use one of the extract or sys_calendar solutions. And test your chosen solution because there have been a number of wrong answers supplied to the list:

date/100+1

should read

(date/100)*100+1


and

calendar_date-(day_of_month+1)

should read

calendar_date-day_of_month+1
