It definitely makes a difference whether the date criteria is in the ON statement versus the WHERE clause. Rather than a temp table have you tried a "derived table"? In your example the A table(view) could be a "derived table" (which is the SELECT SQL for that table/view stated in the FROM clause, check the reference manuals).
