I have not done this on a Teradata system as yet (being somewhat new to the platform) but I have done something quite similar in other
RDBMS's. Not that it matters but I used to call this type of thing a "heartbeat" query as the analogy was something along the lines of
checking the pulse of the system...I always found the data to be quite useful, particularly when combined with other monitoring data.
Generally I found that something that collected disk I/O rates was the most useful information to synch up against. For TD, I suspect AMP
or VPROC I/O stats would be equally useful...
