Regarding the join index, I once had the same questions with the following results:
- The limit of what may constitute a row in the join index is either the 16 fields of the first group and the 16 fields of
what becomes the repeating group or max line width (about 254 characters of data). I got this information from both the book and a "very
reliable source" from Rancho Bernardo and subsequent testing seemed to bear it out. I don't quite understand the reason for the max line
width limitation and maybe someone can elaborate on that however, that limit seems to apply.
- The real column limit is 32 (rather than 16) with the columns being stated either as a single group or a primary group or a
repeating group. I did find that there is a hard limit however at 32.
