Not with CPIO or TAR if that's what you have in mind. However, Veritas is now offering a netbackup utility to back up databases via unix
and attached tape silos. The speed is supposed to be very good. According to a presentation at Partners it's faster than mainframe Archive
jobs. You can have a tape drive per node, up to 10 nodes right now, with more later. With that you can get hundreds of gigabytes per
hour.
