Rob,

Nothing immediately springs to mind regarding numeric columns specifically.

I'd be wary of compressing any column whose value is likely to change repeatedly (e.g. account balance) and maybe such columns are more likely to be numeric than character? That may a gross generalisation, but it's the only reason that I can think of for making tat statement.
