Subj:   Problems with CPU Usage

From:   Kenneth Stiglich

Hello, somebody gave me the following sentence to test my CPU usage; "sar -q 5 5". That sentence must run in the unix prompt on the main node, and the results for my system was:

     ------------------------------------------------
     $ sar -q 5 5

     bcpdw1 bcpdw1 4.0 3.0 3446    12/09/99

     21:23:38 runq-sz %runocc swpq-sz %swpocc
     21:23:43     2.5      84
     21:23:48     4.2     100
     21:23:53     3.6     100
     21:23:58     3.5      80
     21:24:03     5.2     100

     Average      3.9      96
     ------------------------------------------------

the explain for the results is that: if you have %runocc over 90% you are overloading the CPU.

I sent a complex query (as usual) and you can see that my CPU is overloaded, but the problem is that my system always is overloaded. Do you know what the best way to improve a best CPU utilization? I mean, Do I need to buy another node or exist the possibility to upgrade the CPU chips to other ones faster?

My current system has 2 nodes with 4 processors each one, managing over 200GB of real Data.

It's normal or we have to grow up?

Thanks in Advance,
