Is it a simple upgrade or a more complex one? For a new PTDBMS or a few unix packages, this almost always seems to go pretty smoothly.
For anything much more complex, such as going from 2.1.0 to 2.1.2 and picking up all of the latest unix packages, something usually goes
wrong (for example, there always seems to be a problem with licenses when pulling packages off of a CD). We're lucky enough to have a test
system so that we can get the procedures ironed out before we implement on production.
What procedures are you using and how familiar are you with them? I must say that the PUT tool has been greatly improved since we first
got it and it makes installation much easier. The only problem is that we end up calling NCR support for almost every error message that
appears because it's not clear what the error messages mean.
Is it a small system or a large one? Many times we seem to lose a processor node while upgrading software on our large 5150, but this
never happens on our small 5150. I like having NCR on site when we upgrade our large machine to handle unexpected problems.
