Dennis, I'm glad you brought this up. I'm not sure what your second sentence means -- atomic upsert (UPDATE ... ELSE INSERT) is an SQL statement, and it was introduced in V2R4.1. So what exactly is the purpose of MERGE INTO?

Good question. Perhaps ANSI compatibility?

Some mystery surrounds MERGE INTO.

From a mere undocumented synonym of INSERT ... SELECT
