Subj:   Pictures and SQL Assistant

From:   Dempsey, Mike

Starting with SQL Assistant 6.2 (and ODBC 3.3) you can both store and retreive pictures, or any other kind of binary data.

In the case of pictures (bmp, jpg, gif, ico) you can choose to display them in the answer grid and/or save them to a file on your PC. (One file for each picture)

For other binary data you must save them to files. (A 'button' will be displayed in the corresponding cell. If you click on the button that file will be opened using the application associated with the file type.)

You can import binary data directly from the picture (or other) files by specifying '??' as the corresponding parameter marker in the Insert statement. (Instead of the usual '?' parameter.)

The Import file would contain the actual (unqualified) file name of the file to be imported for that row/column, instead of a data 'value'. (Note that the binary files must be in the same directory as the import file.)

You must specify a buffer size (on the Export tab of Options) that is large enough to hold the largest file you plan to import. (Max of 1 MB)

You can retreive/import BYTE or VARBYTE data up to 64,000 bytes, or retrieve BLOB data of any size. (Import of BLOB data is limited to 1 MB) Pre-V2R5.1 you are therefore limited to 64000 bytes since BLOBs are not supported. (The limits will be different if you are working with other vendor databases.)

For additional information refer to the help file or user guide.
