Subj:   Re: Oracle Transparent Gateway to Teradata

From:   Hassinger, Bill

Here are my observations concerning the Oracle Gateway.

It sits on top of Teradata ODBC, so the access and speed has the same limitations that any other ODBC client has.

Download is reasonable, upload is extremely slow. The Gateway connection acts like MS Access in sending a record at a time during uploads and I had to use a cursor to script the load rather then an insert select.

It is difficult to create the WHERE clause of the SQL statements. Teradata and Oracle don't seem to exchange dates very well.

As Oracle applications get more user friendly, the sql conversion problems get worse. It is easier to go through the Gateway from SQL+ than Oracle Dicoverer.

If I remember correctly, data reduction was performed to limit amount of data transmitted to the client for joins when Oracle tables were joined to Teradata tables. But the client machine will still be performing much of the work.

Depending on your load window and ODBC performance, you may still want to move data using some bulk unload/load alternatives.
