Thanks for the examples, they work a treat! (I have to confess, I didn't know you could use a negative position).

Anyway, as to why anyone might want to do this, we have a town name that we also store as reversed. This was done before my time but I'm guessing that it might (depending upon the data) minimize the number of hits from a search.

For example, I would imagine that, taking my surname as an example, fewer entries from a search of 'HGU' would be returned as opposed to 'CLO'.

Anyway, it was just an example on UDF's which was my main point.
