The only problem that I've found in off-the-shelf tools is that the tools are not Ansi compliant. Eg., InfoReports from Platinum does not perform Ansi outer join syntax. Rather, when an outer join is requested, in the SQL code it does an inner join and a union with the rows not included in the inner join. The SQL code, thus, becomes extremely cumbersome and large.

I agree that the extensions add significant power to the system.
