Geoffrey, The reason we want to convert the value from the 32 bit char representation to 16 bit binary, is two-fold: 1. We want to use this value as the Primary Index (and Primary key), and would prefer to have a 16 Byte column for this purpose, rather than 32 Bytes. 2. Space saving in general. The identifier is used for transactional records, so the volumes are large. We find it strange that Teradata would generate an error when trying to convert between char and byte data types, despite the fact that a char literal can be converted to a byte data type (via the xb operator).
