Subj:   Re: Parallel Efficiency

From:   Clark, Dave

Ray Newell is correct: "Efficiency percentages should be closer to 100% assuming a reasonably loaded system."

Keep in mind that Teradata is a parallel database so the ideal is to balance resource use. Two dimensions come into play when considering the balance. The first is balanced system use throughout the day. The second is to balanced use across nodes, amps or devices for a given point in time.

Rather than taking a single data point, try running the Resnode macro:

     exec dbc.resnode(current_date, current_date,, );

This should give a broader picture of use. Your ResUsage collection and logging rates should be set to 600 seconds. The numbers will vary both system to system but also, for a given system, throughout the day. I usually see CPU efficiency numbers over 80% for the most part. IO efficiency will vary widely. I have seen a range of 30-80% or more. If your numbers continue to be low, check for spikes in system use and use the macros: ResCPUByNode, ResCPUByAMP, ResLdvByNode, and ResLdvByAMP to see if there are spikes at these levels.
