Subj:   Re: How to split full name to first, middle & last

From:   Fenwick, Ruth

Before I answer I have a couple of questions about table structure and data demographics

Please clarify the following

1) full name is in 1 column?

2) do spaces exist for any of your names....example Mary Jane is a first name not a first name and middle name or the surname Da Silva

3) it is common to have no middle name at all

If your names has spaces, as I expect it will, I don't see an easy way to split it out. I don't see how you can recognize John Da Silva as Firstname: John, and Last Name: Da Silva, and recognize John David Smith as First Name: John, Middle Name: David Last Name: Smith....both examples have two spaces.

You could do something by counting the number of spaces and the position of the spaces, but that assumes a space delineates first name from middle name from last name.
