I've taken the advise of Asifuddin in taking the trouble of generating Stats on the Work Table (just the Joining Columns), and I'm pleased to say that it's now working a treat !

I'm now getting a Hash Join, rather than the Product Join from before (i.e. with no Stats)

So, thanks for the pragmatic answer of, basically, whatever the reasoning behind it, just help out the Optimizer a bit and move on.

As it happens, it was at the back of my mind to write an enhancement to the Stored Procedure in doing this, so it was just the push that I needed !
