I would go with a judgement on taking little pain of collecting stats on work-tables and give a supporting hand to optimizer to gauge the situation better and plan to its best.

As we all know there are many changes that went into TD optimizer - and having statistics will certainly help. I hope you can share your experience on how the run goes with stats.

Also note the DBSControl/cost profile(if being used) settings do come into play. If you are to compare an earlier version to this - please see, if anything can be tuned in here as well.
