Whilst the stale stats will take a very small amount of space in DBC, this is the same if the stats are fresh or stale. If you look on the Teradata developer exchange, there are details in Carrie's blogs about the best practises for stats collects, when to collect, when to rely on random amp sample and when to use sample stats etc...

Another thing to consider with stats refresh rates post TD12, is that extrapolation of stats can take place to aid the optimiser.

As with any stats methodology you should measure the benefits against the costs of collection and test the impacts the stats methods have on the explain plan(s).
