Just to correct a frequent misunderstanding that was repeated in this thread:

If you omit the COMPRESS clause, NULLs are NOT compressed.

If you specify COMPRESS, you need not explicitly list NULL as one of the compressed values. It is only in this sense that NULL is compressed "by default".
