Ah well, we learn something new every day...

So it looks like I was wrong. Maybe there is a benefit to refreshing statistics after a system expansion.

BUT remember that all of this discussion is around the use of NUSI's, so maybe you only need to refresh stats on NUSI columns and not evey set of statistics that you have collected.
