Also check the following:

1. Spool allocation to the userid you are running under

2. Is the userid you are using used in other processes that can be running at same time?

3. Is the query skewed badly?

4 are the tables you are referencing (or spools) skewed badly?

5 is one of the columns you are joining contain domain values that are highly skewed (i.e. big % of same value or NULL)?
