Subj:   Re: Exchange Partitions

From:   Victor Sokovin

It's definitely an inferior process to simply exchanging the partition. I'd say that after data concurrency and autonomous transactions, partition exchange is the next Oracle feature I most miss.

I think it is good that this is being said so that Teradata can take this on board in some future releases. The "exchange" is mainly manipulation on the table header level, even if the stats etc have to be exchanged as well. Of course, this will require some code changes and testing but the benefits for customers and, therefore, the vendor are obvious.

Can't grasp why they did not implement this yet.

(Next would be that the OLAP windowing functions work only over number of rows rather than data ranges, and then the fact that in 5 years on Oracle, I never found a query generating incorrect results, but in the last three weeks I've written two where Teradata gets the wrong answer.)

Sorry to hear about the wrong results. Do you mind sharing these cases so that others do not trap into them? Thanks.

Victor
