The annoying behavior you describe - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but you didn't actually change anything - can be caused by network issues. If you have multiple "COPs" perhaps only one of them has a problem and it depends on which one gets picked, round-robin.

If the problem is speed / duplex settings, you may even be able to login most of the time but fail when you try to send larger data blocks.
