I take your word for it, Dave, but how does it help with the original question? It's probably getting too late here for me to follow but your
(or Tom's) method seems to be some kind of deduping whereas the question was about sorting and extracting rows with some ranking condition
(highest ranking in this particular case). I understand one either does the join described in the original posting or goes OLAP.
