I am a bit confused by your reply and subject. If it is fixed length, why are you using VARTEXT? Not that it really matters.

Is the file on the mainframe and MLoad on the mainframe too so that both know that EBCDIC data is to be expected?

How was the file created? Does the creating program put any type of control info on the beginning of the file?

These are things that you should look for in the data file.
