Subj:   Re: Ratio of reserved space to data space

From:   fachtna.c.donovan

Hi,

1) On average we give about 20% to 10% head room in each of our application databases.

ie If a database is assigned 200GB we will wait until it has used over 180GB before we add space to it, based on expected growth.

2) We assign out reserved space to a master database which sits under DBC and is the parent of all other application databases. This is where we move space from to increase the size of the database. The space that we have left in DBC (1 TB) for Access Log, system table (eg dbc.tables), & TJ and is not used for any other purpose.

eg

     DBC (1TB)
     |-- Reserved spool database (1TB)
     |
     |-- Master database - DB1 (Total space 4 TB)
     | - DB2
     | - DB3
     | -- Database of users

3) We don't hold reserved space for a comprised database that would need if it needed to be recovered. We have a backup system that we could fall over to or the particular database would be unavailable during recovery.

Thanks,

Fachtna
