Ok, seems like the bottom line is :

1) currently, collect stats will not work within a BT; ET:

2) We will have to wait until either 13.0 or 13.1 (where it will no longer write the stats it collects into DBC.TVFields and DBC.Indexes, but into a new dictionary table that's used *only* to contain statistics. That way, the system won't have to hold write locks for a relatively long time on the very frequently updated DBC.TVFields and DBC.Indexes tables.)
