We've had a recent problem with loading some data (derived from Oracle) into Teradata, where particularly textual fields contain a Linefeed character (which I'm told takes up two bytes). This situation occurs where the Users (bless them!) see fit to press Enter on the screen and then continue with the textual field - actually, not unreasonable from a User perspective, I have to say. When we Fastload the data, however, from an input file defined as variable length, the load falls over because Fastload has interpreted the Linefeed as the end of the record and therefore moves onto what it thinks is the next line. Given that each textual field could contain more than one Linefeed, it's not entirely straightforward to correct it. Whilst we've got some ideas as to how to deal with this, particularly on the Oracle extract side, has anyone encountered similar issues and, if so, how did you resolve the issue ? Ultimately, I'd like to end up with the Linefeed character back in the data within Teradata, thereby achieving consistency of data between the operational system and the Teradata EDW. Much obliged for any answers. Dave Clough
