David, You don't have to compile the UDF outside of Teradata, but you would want to so that you could test it independently of the database. When you run the "CREATE FUNCTION" or "REPLACE FUNCTION", Teradata will use the compiler that is on one of the nodes to compile the UDF. I don't have the exact same compiler version that is on the Teradata node, but for the most part, if it compiles ok with my local compiler, it will compile ok on using the compiler that is on the node.
