I think you answered your own question.

If you want to rank your result set, you could use OLAP analytical function to stop processing after certain threshhold.

The utility that I developed is pretty much on the same lines as other have developed. As you rightly pointed it out, it is pretty resource intesive job.

I am eager to see if we get any inputs from others on this as well.
