Simply compare the column value to be not equal to spaces. TRIM removes leading and trailing spaces if not specifically directed (i.e. TRIM(LEADING FROM f_col1) or TRIM(TRAILING FROM f_col1) ).

If the f_col1 value contains all spaces, the TRIM function would remove the values to a null length string.
