Have you try the following:

     .FIELD IN_a        * VARCHAR(1) NULLIF ' ';
     .FIELD IN_b        * VARCHAR(14);
     .FIELD IN_c        * VARCHAR(6) NULLIF ' ';

I think there are example in the mload manual for .field command section.
