Subj:   Re: How Do You Measure/Validate Compression Savings?

From:   frank.c.martinez

"Few" large tables? Well, the population of large tables is always much smaller than the large population of small tables (uh, read that slowly). But we have enough large tables that implementing compression on them is a major thing THAT WE FEEL NEEDS TO GET DONE. And doing them by hand, or even using a statistical tool to do at least the analysis work just takes a whole lot of time. Especially since the demographics of the data change over time. Handwritten tools are nice, but since when do even professional carpenters go out and MAKE their own tools? Or is it just that we don't like using tools, even though we don't mind imposing them on our users?
