As a newcomer to Teradata SQL is there a way of counting how many of a particular character occurs in any given string?

e.g. Count 'A' in 'AACCFFAAGRTA' gives the result 5

And is there a function to get the actual defined size of a column.?

Example.

     EMP_NAME CHAR(30);
     EMP_ADD VARCHAR(100);

Defined size of EMP_NAME is 30 and EMP_ADD is 100.
