You provide so little information that it is difficult to even understand your problem. You do not tell us what the data looks like without using your to_char and to_date. You do not even tell us what client you are using to "load" the data.

Working on such minimal information, you INSERT should probably look something like this:

     INSERT INTO TABLENAME VALUES ('01-MAR-01' (date, format 'yy-mmm-dd');

You can find this type of information in multiple publications regarding Teradata.
