Sounds like good plan this x'1F' separator. Trouble is, we can't seem to get the

     SET RECORD VARTEXT "value";

to work with x'1F'. We've tried a few obvious combinations, including pasting the value in between the double quotes, each to no avail.

Geoffrey, have you managed to use this approach, or do you know if it's a documented approach ?

The way things are going, it looks as though we'll need to go for fixed position on the input file.
