I've found an interesting thread in the archives:

The entire thread seems to be relevant but I have chosen Dieter's posting because it provides the best explanation for the math involved.
But what does this mean in this case? A lot of unique values in the first partition? If they are just some silly values without business meaning,
dropping them might improve the stats (for as much as it is possible on releases < 6.1).
