Subj:   Using Insert SQL of Teradata v.s. Informatica Maps

From:   Pratheesh Venkataraman

Dear Members,

We are developing a Data warehousing project involving different sources (Oracle, DB2, Teradata) and target for the same being Teradata for different subject areas (Claims, Membership, etc).

We have a logical staging area between source and target.

>From Source to Staging

All the Business logic is performed using ETL tool of Informatica

>From Staging to Target

This is more of a straight move from staging to EDL, plus doing a lookup on CMS Crosswalk table. Then perform a lookup on Default values and load either source value or default value depending on the Business rule to Target.

Question

1. From staging to Target, can we use Insert SQL feature of Teradata instead of ETL Tool Informatica?

2. How do we use Insert SQL feature for performing a lookup?

3. I know for sure that lookups, etc can be performed using joins in Insert SQL of Teradata, but what are the pros and cons of using Insert SQL instead of Informatica mapping

If you can please let me know the answers to above question ASAP, it would be of great help

Sincere Thanks,

Pratheesh
