You have already received an answer for not needing a bogus table like DUAL because the FROM statement is optional in Teradata.

You asked about an editor with BTEQ. As indicated if this is the one you choose to use, another editor with copy and pasting or redirection is the normal processing. However, there is also a BTEQWin version. When using it you have the ability to highlight the text/SQL that you wish to modify and in combination, hold the Ctrl key and press the "e" key to invoke the editor. Once you have changed the statement, simply click on the "Submit" button and the SQL is passed to Teradata.

Be sure to do a .show control to see the current settings used by BTEQ and the fact that you can change them to enhance the output returned as a result of your SQL. Also, a very handy command to know about is the .os command. It provides a hook to the "o"perating "s"ystem. So, if you are running on Windows, a .os dir, will provide you a directory list of the current directory.
