Victor's approach of using the ANSI cast would resolve the problem I created in my example.

However, my point was that there was insufficient information in the original posting to determine what was being done and hence it is difficult to offer advice for a solution.

Assuming my example corresponds in some way to what "Anomy, anon" is doing to incur the Primary Index violation, then Victor's solution is workable - provided the integer values don't exceed the number of character positions available in the character field.
