May be you can try writing to a buffer using the write function and once when the buffer is full or near full try to write in to the pipe. You
may also experiment with varying sizes of the buffer to see where you gain or loose with performance... Usually the zip/unzip process use 32 or 64
Kb of buffer to write ... Which is far higher compared to 300 bytes...
