Subj:   Re: Can't extract data (FASTEXPORT) from a remote teradataserver

From:   Meade, Cornelius

The "TDW_PROD" item in your script is being used by fastexport (note that this interpretation of the logon syntax also applies to any of the other TD client utilities such as bteq, mload, etc.) to identify a TCPIP host/server address... In order for that to work on the remote workstation that is trying to run the fastexport utility, you need to have an entry in the hosts file on that platform that identifies a DNS name and/or physical ip address of the TD server you are trying to connect to.....

For example, the hosts file on the remote workstation, if it is windows based, might have an entry like the following....

     # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
     #
     # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
     #
     # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names.
     # Each entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address
     # should be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding
     # host name. The IP address and the host name should be separated
     # by at least one space.
     #
     # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on
     # individual lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#'
     # symbol.
     #
     # For example:
     #
     # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
     # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

     xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx TDW_PROD

Where the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx would be one of physical IP addresses of a box that the TD server environment is running on.
