It's these days a common approach to define big tables as mutiset and you can see often better performance - but you need to assure that your process is not loading a data set twice by mistake (for example run the insert / select twice in an restart situation)!

Take your time to really check your processes on this.

Regarding load into empty table plus ins/sel

Which concerns exist on loading the data direct into the table? Did you test both approaches?
