Clay, if you want to replace '(' and ')', just copy the code for tab and use their hex values, namely '28'xc and '29'xc.

The hang is weird. I tried a few things and got these results:

Original code: the code seems to finish, and I can query the debugging tables from another session.

Replace the last "end" with "end SPLabel": code seems to finish, but I cannot query the debugging tables.

Remove "SPLabel" altogether: hangs; cannot query the debugging tables; after the session is aborted, Objects_Request_Text has the modified text but the other 3 tables are empty.

This suggests a bug in the SP compiler.
