Subj:   Re: Difference between Defrag and Packdisk

From:   Pankow, Jeff

Packdisk frees up cylinders by moving data off of a populated cylinder to different cylinders with free space greater than the system or specified packing percentage, to fill up all populated cylinders to that packing percentage. This should free up cylinders in your system.

Defrag moves all blank space in a cylinder to the end of a cylinder. The percentage of use in the cylinder does not change.

Under most circumstances, you should run packdisk to free up space when needed (you start to see minicylpacks on your entire system), and not run defrag at all.

FYI - Minicylpacks on a small number of vprocs typically indicates data skew in your system, and not an overall space issue.
