     COALESCE (C.COL1,P.COL1)

is internally converted to the equivalent (by definition) CASE statement

     CASE WHEN C.COL1 IS NOT NULL THEN C.COL1 ELSE P.COL1 END

so it really makes no difference.

You mention that you want to "get things going faster"; to advise you on that we'd need to see the DDL, JOIN, and EXPLAIN info..
